You can never have too many healthy snacks around, especially when you're on the move so much like us and workout constantly. We both love fueling our bodies with as much fresh food as possible, but there are definitely those times when you need a quick grab-and-go snack to give you energy and nutrients quickly. Yes, you could probably stock up on protein bars from the store and there are some healthier brands out there, but often we find that they’re still full of unnecessary sugars that we don't want to put in our bodies. This is why we’re always thinking of delicious protein balls to make and keep around (although they never last long in our house!). These Matcha Chocolate Protein Balls are full of protein, energy, antioxidants, and healthy fats and they’re so tasty they could be dessert!
When creating this recipe, we decided to make it nut free and see how it would go. Well, these protein balls are freaking amazing! We used coconut butter as the base instead of almond butter (our usual go to) and it gives them a creamy, fudgy texture with a little bit of sweetness too. For protein, we used our favorite Vega Sport Protein in chocolate flavor and added a bit more cacao powder just to make sure the chocolate really comes out as you eat them. On top of the energy you will get from the protein and cacao powders, we added a touch of matcha powder for even more antioxidants, natural caffeine, and energy. It's really hard not to eat them all as you're making them!
We feel it's really important to pay attention to what goes into your food. Food should be enjoyable, taste good, be comforting and pleasurable, and it should also be healing and give you fuel. By making your own food at home, whether it's these Matcha Chocolate Protein Balls or sauces or ice cream or salads, you're able to control what goes into the dish and get satisfaction from knowing you created something yourself! 1 cup coconut butter
1 scoop chocolate protein powder (we used VEGA)
3 Tbsp. raw cacao powder
1 ½ Tbsp. matcha powder
2 medjool dates, pitted
Dash pink salt
2 Tbsp. cacao nibs
- Process all ingredients except the cacao nibs in your food processor until fully combined.
- Add cacao nibs and pulse a few times to incorporate.
- Using a small cookie scoop, form balls and place on a pan or plate in your fridge for ~30 mintes.
- Once firm, store the protein balls in a container at room temperature.
